The Iberian honeybee — Apis mellifera iberiensis —
is the native honeybee of Portugal and is naturally at home
in the Serra do Caldeirão.
Adapted to the region’s dry summers, heat and wild
Mediterranean flora, it forages across the surrounding hills
as the lavender comes into bloom. Here, in the Serra do Caldeirão,
it is this native bee that gathers the nectar for Mel de Pipeiros.
