Born in the Serra

WHERE THE IBERIAN
HONEYBEE BELONGS
More than five million bees. 120 colonies. One extraordinary world, hidden in the hills of the Serra do Caldeirão. Here, life follows the rhythm of the seasons, as thousands of bees work together in remarkable harmony.

Born for this landscape

Of more than 20,000 bee species worldwide, the Iberian honey bee (Apis mellifera iberiensis) is native to this part of Europe. Naturally adapted to the Mediterranean climate, it thrives among the wild flowers, dry hills and changing seasons of the Serra do Caldeirão.At the height of the season, our 120 colonies are home to more than five million bees.

A world within the hive

A honeybee colony is an extraordinary society. One queen lays the eggs, thousands of female workers care for the young, build honeycomb, gather food and protect the hive. Male bees, called drones, have one main purpose: to mate with a queen. Every bee has its role. Together, they form a remarkable living community.

The language of the bees

Bees have an extraordinary way of communicating. Through a remarkable movement known as the waggle dance, they share the direction and distance of food sources with their fellow bees.

A honeybee can travel up to five kilometres from its hive in search of nectar and pollen, exploring the wild lavender and native flowers of the Serra do Caldeirão.

Made to collect

Shown above is the Iberian honey bee, Apis meliferera iberiensis. It tongue gathers nectar, while pollen is carried back to the hive in baskets on its hind legs. Inside the hive, nectar is gradually transformed into honey.

Both honey and pollen can be found in our collection: Wild Lavender Honey and Pollen.

Made to collect

The Iberian honey bee collects nectar with its long tongue and carries pollen in special baskets on its hind legs.Back in the hive, nectar is transformed into honey, while pollen provides essential nutrients for the colony. Both are part of our collection: Wild Lavender Honey and Pollen.

A delicate
balance

As bees travel from flower to flower, they carry pollen that helps plants reproduce. This quiet work supports the wild vegetation and biodiversity of the Serra do Caldeirão.Bees, flowers and landscape depend on one another. Together, they shape the natural origins of Mel de Pipeiros.
